Kiefner offers a broad range of consulting services including fitness for service assessments, failure analysis and welding, in-line inspection qualification, external loading and stress analysis, and training workshops.   

Position Purpose

  • The main function of the pipeline stress analysis engineer is to deliver technical results through performing stress analysis of buried or above ground pipelines and piping components under internal and external mechanical and thermal loading.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform non-linear pipe stress analyses using ANSYS or ABAQUS in accordance with API 579, BS 7910 or other applicable standard.
  • Perform pipeline stress monitoring calculations and interpret results to formulate mitigation plans for pipelines subjected to geohazards such as slope instability and ground subsidence.
  • Perform stress calculations in MathCad or similar numerical programming tools by utilizing in-house programs and creating new programs, as needed.
  • Perform fatigue and vibration assessments using FEA and in-house programs.
  • Prepare proposals that define a project objective, scope, best method for meeting the objective, schedule, budget and deliverables.
  • Prepare written reports for project work and presentations of results, as needed.
  • Ensure all project management functions are executed including budget tracking, scheduling and regular client communications.
  • Complete weekly time sheet, expense reports, and monthly project forecast.
  • Adhere to all company policies regarding purchasing, ethics, and safety.
  • Other responsibilities as directed by the Service Line Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assists the Service Line Manager by mentoring and training junior level staff
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment for all staff ensuring all Applus RTD and Kiefner policies are being followed

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must demonstrate thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering mechanics. 
  • Must show a thorough understanding of statics, strength of materials, vibrations, fracture mechanics and elasticity. 
  • Must be proficient in the setup of and providing solutions for complex stress analysis models using ANSYS or ABAQUS.
  • Must be skilled in assessing pipe-soil interaction due to ground movement and other loading sources.
  • Ability to multi-task and properly execute and prioritize multiple, simultaneous assignments under deadliness is required.
  • Familiarity with fitness for service assessments using standardized protocols such as API 579 and BS 7910 is required. 
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills including technical writing is required.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. 
  • Knowledge of U.S. Pipeline regulations (CFR 192 and 195) and U.S. codes such as ASME B31.4 and ASME B31.8 is a plus.
  • Experience in a numerical programming tool (MathCad, Matlab, Mathmatica or Maxima) to setup and perform stress analysis is desirable. 
  • Knowledge of the theory of plasticity, nonlinear mechanics, plates and shells is desirable.

Education and Work Experience

  • BS in engineering or physics, MS or PhD is a plus.
  • 5 to 10 years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry.
  • Pipeline operator experience is a plus.

Certificates and Licenses Required

  • Professional Engineer, preferred.

Working Conditions

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work inside an office environment, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes
  • Occasional visits to field sites will require employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and working environment
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Must be physically located in Columbus, OH
  • Ability to travel when required, nationally, up to 20% of the time.
